We Tried to Make the Halal Guys Platter at Home

You know the feeling. It’s late at night and you’ve got a craving for Halal Guys. Meaty, fragrant, and packed with flavor, the $7 meal is a knockout. Having said that, sometimes, you’re just not in the mood to take a long subway ride, or even, cross the GW to fulfill that craving. So, we decided to make it at home!

After browsing the internet for almost an hour, we found a great recipe for the meat and rice and the closest recipe to recreating their magic White Sauce. We used the white sauce recipe as is, and we found it to be perfect. The Meat and Rice recipes were adapted.

For the Meat
 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
 1 minced shallot or yellow onion
 3 cloves of garlic
 1 tbsp lemon juice
 1 tsp salt
 ½ tsp hot Hungarian paprika
 ½ tsp ground cumin
 ½ tsp mild curry powder
 ½ tsp ground coriander
 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
 ½ tsp ground black pepper
 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
For the Rice
 1 cup Carolina parboiled rice
 ¾ cup minced yellow onion
 ¼ tsp tumeric
  tsp cardamom
 1.50 cups chicken or vegetable stock (water can work too)
 salt, to taste
For the Toppings
 4 leaves of lettuce, shredded (iceberg or greenleaf)
 1 tomato, sliced into eighths
 Harissa hot sauce
 2 Toufayan pita breads
 1 cup White Sauce

For the rice:

- Wash 1 cup of Carolina Parboiled rice
- In a small pot, mix the rice, onion, stock, and spices and bring to a boil over medium heat
- Once the rice begins to boil, lower the heat to medium-low
- Cook until all the water has absorbed and the rice is fully cooked and fluffy.
- Keep covered until time to serve

For the meat:

- Mix the beef, onion/shallot, garlic, and spices in a separate bowl
- Heat the EVOO in pan until hot
- Cook the beef mix until browned and until there is a nice char

Assembly:

- In a bowl, place a few scoops of the yellow rice. Next, top with a generous heaping of the spiced meats.
- Next, place sliced pita bread, shredded lettuce, and tomatoes
- Drizzle a generous amount of White Sauce and harissa hot sauce
- Enjoy!
